Good News: No More Wireless Networking Products from Apple
Today’s rumour is that Apple have reassigned the team that developed Airport wireless network hubs. According to Bloomberg:
Apple began shutting down the wireless router team over the past year, dispersing engineers to other product development groups, including the one handling the Apple TV, said the people, who asked not to be named because the decision hasn’t been publicly announced.
This news accompanies the announcement that Apple is no longer in the display business as well.
Why is this good news? The engineers in these teams are now free to do more distinctive things. Obviously Apple thinks that there is not much they can add to these products in coming years. They’re leaving these mature markets to others.
Some people hoped that Apple would shake up the world of touch-screen displays for computers. It looks like Macs will use an indirect manipulation model for the foreseeable future.
So, what could you do with teams of engineers who haven’t been working on displays and wireless products for at least a year?
A standalone VR/AR device? Good news.
