The rewind serie continue with the last episode : round 4.

Reminder : We are talking about a community event organized by Akropolis project. 1 round left at the time of writing this article (Saturday, 6th of July), this is your last chance to win points with rounds, so hurry up !

Topic of the day : Informal Economy

Definition (Akropolis Wiki) :

The informal economy can be defined as the set of economic activities, such as businesses or jobs, that are not regulated or protected by the state. The term originally applied to unregistered self-employment and small enterprises.

Today, 2 billions of people are concerned by the informal economy.
The informal economy include both developed and developing countries with a majority in South Africa, South Asia and Africa.

Task 1 of the quest started with the following themes :

  1. What examples of informal Economy can you name in your country ?
  2. How and why can informal Economy become the backbone of decentralized finance ?
  3. Pick an example of informal Economy from around the world and explain why you think it’s the best model for all future economies in that sector.

I personnally chose to answer first question and develop about the situation in my country : France. The black market is quite developed here because of migration after world wars, France lacking of workforces, plenty of citizens living around started to flow to France to have better living conditions. Decades after, it continues to inspire people who are looking for a better situation and it can be an issue because the people are most of the time paid within the black market and the price is nowhere comparable to what locals can ask for.
We can find also a lot of informal economy in transportation, tourism, in the liberal professions like doctor, tobaccos and so on.

Fact is that taxes in France are constantly growing and most of companies lack to provide enough activity or just invest too much ressources for a little return on investment. That’s why they use informal economy to make their situation more profitable and in some cases just survive.

Following that task, a quizz and a puzzle had to be solved as always. You can find all the details (questions and answers) going to this link.

We will focus on the search part, which has not been shared on the wiki.

First part

1st variant : Find the National environment management authority building. On the road walk west for about 900 meters. Look right - What can turn your stuff into cash ?

Hint : Hills of Impala

2nd variant : Find the National treasury building. Walk about 300 meters to the east. Then make a right turn and move another 60 meters to the south. Look at your right — what is the nail polish brand ?

Hint : Cool water city

I had personally the 2nd variant. I first tried to look to know which was the cool water city.

“cool water city “first answer on Google

After finding it was Nairobi, I tried to look on Google Maps where was the National treasury building in Nairobi.

Google maps request

I didn’t know, but you can use a tool on Google Maps which help you to create a distance measurement. For that, clic-right on the map, select “measure a distance” and then create your path. You can see above with the mentioned distance of my question where was the ending point.

I personnally lost a ton of time because I walked putting the first person view and looking around to see if I could see a polish brand. Sigh…

Using Google Maps integrated distance measure tool and then the first person view (select the yellow guy on the bottom right of the page), you can be just next to the destination : Luron.

This is the answer for first part !

Second part

What is the destination of an airplane, scheduled to depart from capital airport at 12:15PM on this tuesday ?

Hint : An east African country mentioned in today’s article where term “chama” is used for the Informal Savings groups.

Looking at Akropolis introduction article, I found out the country mentioned was Kenya. I searched then on Google which was the capital of Kenya and the airport : Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

You can search then the flights going from an airport using Flightstat tracker website.

Search of Kenya capital airport flight on a specific day and hour timeframe
List of flights with destination on the right

I couldn’t select the date we had because it was some time ago but in the example above you can have an idea of how does it work. If I recall correctly, destination was as well the one going mentioned at 12:15 : Antananarivo.
And this was the answer for the final part of round 4.

This is the end for this rewind serie, unfortunately…

BUT tomorrow, 5th of July, last round of Akropolis Community Quest is going to happen. Stay tuned for the coming recap and try to join !

Regards,
Alexis
