I have a grid-tie microinverted system. It works great, but just getting your grid-tie-in from PG&E probably doubles or triples (or more) your budget. However, the newer inverters have a plug often that you can plug a single appliance into (eg. fridge) when power is out but the sun is shining.

The long term here is something like the Tesla wallpack though, and when that becomes available I may look into an off-grid upgrade. At present though, a standalone generator and a gas can is more cost efficient than attempting to store power yourself.
