How To Deal With Haters

Haters are inevitable. Everyone deals with them. In this social media driven age, every little bit of your life is scrutinized by others. When you’re an aspiring athlete, this is very clear as well. Haters are everywhere. They could be teammates, coaches, other parents, etc.

Having haters is not a bad thing. Usually, if someone is hating they’re typically jealous of you. Typically, the more haters you have the more successful you are. Look at professional athletes across several sports: Derek Jeter, LeBron James, Tom Brady. These guys are at the pinnacle of their sports. However, they’re also the most scrutinized players outside of their teams fanbases.

Obviously, being at the amateur level is quite different than being a multi million dollar athlete. But it’s still challenging. As athletes and competitors, of course we all strive to use other people’s envy to drive us to bigger and massive success. This is a good tool, however there are other ways to rise above the noise of outsiders trying to hold you back.

In order to be great, you need to have a vision. The bigger your vision and dreams, the more likely someone will doubt you. One of the key things to overcoming haters is to prove them wrong on a day by day basis. Your goals will likely take years to achieve. So set short term goals that are achievable so that you can quickly turn your doubters into believers.

You need to be your own #1 fan. You need to believe with complete blind optimism that you are going to make it. In order to make it, you need to be the hardest worker in the room. In any room you’re in. It could be the weight room, the field, or the classroom. If you put in the time and are not only the first to arrive and last to leave, but you also maximize your productivity in those hours, you will succeed no matter what anyone says. If you look at criticism and haters the right way, they will be the people who push you out of bed on the days you feel like you just can’t go on.

No matter what level you get to, this negativity will always follow you. It can be exhausting if you don’t find ways to escape it, and have something that helps you mentally reset everyday. Work hard, but at the same time find ways not to take yourself too seriously. It’s important to find balance so that the chase of success doesn’t drain you so you can’t perform at peak levels.

There is nothing better than silencing the haters. The last piece of advice is to remain humble when you get to the top. It’s easy to take the journey for granted once you find some success. Don’t forget how hard it was to get there and even though it’s easy to disrespect your enemies, they’re going to play a huge role in your drive to push yourself beyond what you thought was possible. Just give them a smile. Because they’re just going to keep on hating someone else.
