What I learnt in my (second) first month in Jakarta

Several things stand out after spending a cushy eight months back home in Melbourne.

  1. I’m not responsible for my own transport any more. In Melbourne, you have to make sure a train or tram is coming, and time the walk to the station. Here, I can stumble out my front door onto the back of an ojek in 10 seconds. If I’m not the mood to duel with buses and trucks at 80km/h, a taxi will usually pull up the moment I get my arm above hip-level. Easy.
  2. The slightest drop of rain makes the previous point null and void.
  3. Street food might make you sick, but expensive sandwiches from cafes with cool seating arrangements and wifi will definitely make you sick.
  4. The aforementioned wifi will always conk out the moment you try and file a time-sensitive story.
  5. It will always take at least five minutes to buy a beer at any bar. This increases proportionally to how desperate you are for a drink.
