Two remarks:

  1. I think you are mistaken in your logic where you link your parents skills to yours. I know many people who had no relation at all, biologically that is. Social influence is something but then it doesn’t fit the title. Anyhow, that is not your main point. Just letting you know.
  2. There is an obsession in companies, mostly originating from the USA side, with hype words. I am not sure how it’s done, but it’s like there is an internal facing marketing department that try to sell common sense as something unique and magical. Combined with the obsession for political correctness, which means avoid really discussing the matter at hand, reality is nothing is really different besides company culture videos and blogs etc etc (marketing). I’ve never worked at google but I’ve worked in three different countries, for local and multinational organization and this is what I see.
When logic is applied, big words are demystified and you at the end do a root cause analysis as a proper engineer, this is what you see. Smokescreens of yearly changing hype words.

Could be mistaken though. Never worked for the very high tech companies.
