Something important to do with your own notes is to revise them regularly. I take lots of notes and extract useful facts into AnkiWeb, then when I’m bored on the commute I fire it up for a few minutes to revise. This helps me remember things more accurately, and stops my notes from stagnating over time (sometimes I can’t remember exactly why I recorded a particular note… :).
