I hear this. My mom and I are very close, but only because I censor myself to keep peace. I love her more than anything, but there is a lot of internal conflict in me regarding her choices around my dad.
She and I live 5000 apart. I wish like hell she were closer, but I’m not naive. I know that for close physical proximity to work, emotional intimacy would have to be sacrificed.
