I despise money. Absolutely hate it.

Money is a funny thing. My whole life, I’ve seen it exactly the way you describe it here: an imaginary construct put down to exert control over the masses. They do say it’s the root of all evil. But , it’s not money’s fault. That rests squarely on the shoulders of humanity. The same humanity that has lost its humanity.

Here’s the secret (shh, now. This is just between us.): the way to REALLY have it made in this society is be an abused or abandoned ANIMAL.

People are OUTRAGED about that shit. Post a video story about an abused dog rescued and brought back from the brink of death, and it is guaranteed to go viral. People will issue curses and death threats by the thousands against the perpetrators. There will be a waiting list a mile long to adopt that poor baby.

My friend “came out” about her abuse at the hands of her now ex husband a few months ago. On Facebook. She talked about how finally escaping from that house had left her homeless and destitute. She posted the pictures taken when she pressed charges. She did it to raise awareness. She didn’t ask to be rescued, and she didn’t ask for money. Which is good, I guess.

Because her post had its share of curses and death threats. Of course, they were directed at her.

A female friend commented that she was sorry that had happened, but how could she post that in a public place, for everyone to see? That stuff was supposed to be private. Personal. And didn’t her ex deserve protection of his identity?

That is an example of how we treat our own. I’m not saying we shouldn’t help animals.

But Jesus.

We should at least take care of our own as enthusiastically.

That video of the dog? Not ONE person called it inappropriate for public consumption. Not one person called for protection of the perpetrator’s identity.

Money is a tool. It is a tool that allows certain entities to commit unspeakable acts, and in those cases it is a weapon. But to hate it is pointless. Those who brandish the weapon intending to harm; they are what makes this imaginary thing an evil one. And you’re right-probably nothing short of global extinction is going to change what has become. It breaks my heart that we have done this to each other.

Hatred shouldn’t be where our hearts are settled.
