I remember Sifnos in the early days with hardly any tourist on the island.
In the 70s my parents bought a house in the village of Exambela from an Australian French couple, and some years ago I was fortunate enough to buy the other house the same couple owned in the village. My sister and nephews are also next door so the whole family descends on the island in June for the summer season.
We are privileged to have known the island before it was “discovered” and we have grown together ever since.
Sifnos has now become a must visit destination and it is particularly popular with visitors from France. Many have bought property on the island.
There are three things Sifnos is mostly famous for: its cuisine, its pottery and the Chrisopigi monastery.
Another element that distinguishes Sifnos from many other small islands is that it boasts 8 villages — mostly interconnected -inhabited by locals and newcomers all year round. Other islands “die” in the winter, not Sifnos.
The island has a strong community in the winter months. Most small islands have nowadays very little life in the winter months; they mostly live off tourism.
