Hand Over Hand

people grow

from themselves

and ever closer
together, tangled vines
we choke trees and change lives

but we are away
we have grown apart
from partners, below us

the view is ever greater
but we stop and spread out
see the fallen leaves below

I would grow higher
if I knew when we all learned to be
so skilled at straying

who taught us to fade
and grow flat the next day
forming a canopy of knots

I would go on
if I knew how to bring you
how to bring you all

I would go on
if I knew
how to be carried
