I agree with you that it’s more effective to focus on solving specific, niche problems, especially that real people have (Paul Graham has said that a few times, too).
But I think we may be able to improve upon democracy in large, meaningful ways, and that probably will include technology. As cultures evolve, so do governance structures. New tech may allow us to create new governance structures. Democracy, like capitalism, is still a relatively young experiment. Only Marx has had the audacity, yet, to truly envision a different system.
All the great inventions have not yet been discovered. And maybe it’s not the End of History yet either?
