In the hands of the poor
We live in a world where globalization is part of our daily lives. We don’t need to fly constantly to other countries or to speak many languages in order to be a citizen of the world. Now and more than ever we are part of a big family, a family with different attitudes, views and agendas. Technology has been responsible for expanding knowledge since ancient times but in recent years we have done it at an incredible speed. But for now I will pay a close attention to something special that is happening around the world. The members of this global family who now have complete access to knowledge are the poor people. Knowledge and technology always has been in the hands of the powerful, which comes at no surprise because they have the means to get it and more importantly exercise “control” over it. Now, I think the balance is shifting or to put it more accurately it is spreading. It is also true and fair to admit that this flow of knowledge has been developing since well into the 20 century, but it most be pointed out that NOW it is happening at an incredible speed. Revolutions, social changes, and global news are now been headlined by poor people and persons with low income around the world. The agents of change are now common people with cellphones and with no college degrees. These members of the family are the new headliners and reporters for the major news events in the world. It should be celebrate that while the economic ladder is harder to climb at least the rivers of knowledge and power are slipping through the hands of the few into the hands of the people. More to come…
