The film I chose to focus my study on was Time Code, directed by Mike Figgs in the year 2000. Mike shows four different stories, which overlap into one overall story. He uses four different frames placed on one screen, playing simultaneously, similar to a security guard watching a surveillance screen. He purposely does this to challenge the viewers perception habits by exposing the viewer to the action all at once rather than the traditional linear unfolding of drama in conventional films (Williams, 2000). Throughout the movie, Figgs captures these four different events leading up to the overlay in an attempt to highlight that many events can happen in a short amount time. Another technique used by Figgs is the use of real time, which is utilized to emphasize the dramatic theme of the story. Mike Figgs’ technique has inspired me to utilize both the use of real time recordings and the simultaneous screen frames to highlight how the city is used as a place to bring people together, almost like a meeting point. Throughout the short film, the four frames represent the different aspects of which people are brought to the city include work, study or education, site seeing and shopping. A series of single recorded films are brought together, edited and condensed into a two and a half minute film to highlight the mentioned aspects that people are drawn to the city. The use of the four single frames on the one screen is used as a method of conveying the four occasional perspectives of which people are drawn to the city for. The final condensed film with the four perspectives on one screen serves as a way for the viewer to understand the notion of what a city is, but also understand the relationship between people and the structures within it, as well as the identify the difference in purpose the city has for each individual.
