Social Media in Music Today

You have a good start on your story here. You are doing a great job of producing a visually stimulating layout and design for the piece, and you are starting to formulate some interesting ideas about social media and the music industry. I’ve made some minor suggestions throughout, though most are simply correcting little typos.

There are two main things that need addressed. The first is that it is unclear what this article sets out to do and I think it might be confusing for readers that didn’t have the primer you gave me before I read it. I would take some time in the beginning to explain that two of your publication’s editors/authors (and link your individual accounts when you mention your names) are going to investigate different sides of the same story. Then the split will make a lot more sense, and the article will be better framed. You also might add a concluding section that tries to resolve some of the tension between the two points of view.

Second, you have some basic ideas down, but you need to go into a little bit more depth to produce original content. Right now, a lot of the article is listing different social media platforms and noting that they are useful or not useful. You share some of your opinions about them, which is getting closer to original content. But it really can’t be that convincing when the argument is left vague or simplistic. In essence, you need to find evidence to back some of your claims up. Show me how actual people have used these technologies to get famous. Cite cases, give numbers, etc. And the same from the contrasting point of view. Show me how many people are posting their own original content to SoundCloud, to YouTube, etc., in hopes of getting discovered. Show me underappreciated internet genius that is left under appreciated in relation to a mediocre talent skyrocketing to fame.

The depth you go into doesn’t have to be that of a feature story, with academic research and in depth statistics, but you want to make some overtures in that direction. Look for some infographics. Read some blogs from industry insiders. Take a look at some of the resources I spammed you with in class. I think that if each of you take some of your arguments and ideas, do a small amount of background research, and then incorporate it into the article, you’d have a really original and important piece of content. What you have looks great and is interesting to read, but with a little bit of development you could make an article that people share with each other, have discussions about, etc.
