Sacha and Chris, from Black Goo Coffee, Berkhamsted

The Berkhamsted branch opened just this month on the top floor of Home & Colonial on Berkhamsted High Street, whilst the original Black Goo in Tring continues to keep the punters supplied with freshly made breakfasts, brunches and lunches along with amazing cakes and exquisite coffee.

  1. What motivated you to start your business? What are your plans beyond the new opening?

Sacha is a cake baker who had been selling her amazing creations for over 7 years at local farmers markets, pop-up vintage fairs and many special events. She then spent a year working in the kitchen at the Attic Cafe, Berkhamsted, where she provided cakes and hot foods. Chris on the other hand has spent his life searching out the best bars, cafes and restaurants, that he now conveniently calls ‘research’…. We reached a ‘now or never’ point and decided to put our combined skills (and money) in to opening Black Goo cafe in Tring.

It has been an amazing success since opening the doors at Easter 2016 and gave us the confidence to consider a second one. When the opportunity came up to take over the Attic Cafe, it just seemed a perfect fit. It is a great space that works really well with our style, and fits with the Home & Colonial look. We benefit from visitors to this amazing emporium coming up to visit us, and we attract our own following of customers who get the chance to experience Home & Colonial.

In terms of what’s beyond the new opening, well, we just want to spend some time getting the business running as well as it possibly can in the short term. The odd day off may be nice, then may be a holiday later in the year — it’s been a bit full on for the last 18 months……!!

2. Why do you think Black Goo has been such a success — what’s different about it?

I think we bring a unique style, with music and a buzzy vibe being key elements of our character. We offer hot food — breakfast/brunches as well as a fantastic selection of counter food that is all prepared fresh on the premises by our cooks. And then there’s the cake… We have freshly roasted coffee from a local roaster, Lulu’s of Hertford, with wines/prosecco and craft beers for the adults, and smoothies and milk shakes for the kids (and adults)…

3. What might people not know about you as business owners?

Lots of things, and that’s how it’s going to stay lol! (boo, guys, boo)

4. What do you love most about your local area?

Everything! The fantastic countryside, the wonderful people who helped set up our business and the staff who run it every day, and of course, our customers who have embraced Black Goo with such enthusiasm and passion!

5. Give a shout out to another local business who you think are doing a great job!

Hill Construction — who completed the building work on both shops and were amazing. LuLu’s Coffee — who helped us with so much more than just the coffee!
