Talking without the words

Abstract

The main idea is to create the communicational system of visual language. How can people speak using their personal identity like prints or patterns? I have created the visual language using the numbers and symbols. It’s logically understandable and usable for everyone. It’s possible to explain it and I represent it through fashion and graphic design. These signs are useful for explaining the different types of human life things like “I love you” or “I don’t want to talk”, “I’m introvergency/extravergency person” and etc. If you cannot say, you can show.

Historical roots

Runes [1]

Picture 1 – Runes

Runes are based on the Greek alphabets. The official name is futhark, what was called after first six alphabets. The runes were developed in the different parts of the Earth after this system was created in the next runic combinations:

● Elder Futhark (Scandinavia)

● Younger Futhark (Norway, Sweden, Denmark)

● Medieval (Latinised)

Look at this set of symbols. It’s logically created the combination of the lines. Line what is made us as the “upright man” is the vertical line “I”. Forefinger is one what directs on the subjects and for telling “I am”, you will use this one vertical finger for pointing to yourself. Next symbol is “day”. It’s discretionary understandable, because the arrows by left and right sides crossed in the center direct you to the past, present and future. And solving these signs, I have started to think about the system of our communication. “Fire” has the vertical orientation, it’s a very dynamic alphabet, rhythm is from “up” to “down”, can be associated with dancing human.

The system of visual language

Numbers

0 – circle, to be closed

1 – no, leader

2 – direction

3 – freedom

4 – for something, human

5 – to be

6 – fish, society

7 – family

8 – infinity

9 – inverse

10 – opened

Numbers are not just for the calculation, it talks in the philosophical meaning and regarded by using it in our life. Numbers are a part of linguistic and visual language.

I use the numbers in my design collection. There are the scarves produced from the silk and deshine.fuse the numbers in my design collection. There are the t-shirts with my design. 9.3 means “no free”, 5.3 means “to be free”, 4.2 means “for two”, 4.3 – for free, 2.5 – to be, 1.5 – not to be, 2.51 – to be a leader, 14.80 – unlimited, 4.1 – for the leader, 25.015 – to be or not to be, 1.58 – and etc.

Symbols

There is a table with my symbols:

Thes ymbolsl ike“ ?,+, -“ a nd etc.aree veryday in our speech and we use it in writing and talking. All of the dialogues are based on my research:

  • Hi,
  • - How Are you?
  • - I’m fine, thank you. Are you?
  • - I’m good
  • - We can be together.
  • - Really?
  • - No. Yes. And look at love.
  • The End.

This conversation looks in the signs what I have created:

Asking people about understanding these symbols, the answers were received in the way of logic and experience based meaning. All of 40 interviewees understood what it means without long explanation and reading the symbols.

Stereotyping in communication

How do we percept the information?

It’s a psychological question and can be answered by science. Our language like English, German and other linguistic systems were created using human logic and common ability to percept the signs-alphabets in the right way and remember all of them, to make the combination of the sentences. The perception is based on the conceptualisation, identification and categorisation. “What are we doing when we see something?” [2]. All our organs try to be concentrated on reading what we want to understand: look at it, feel it, associate it, compare, listen, observe. It’s about. our common vision. Coming back to the ruins, the alphabet “fire” talks about observation and emotions of percepting it, fire has the vertical direction and every time moves, it depends from the environment. This is a logical and experience built symbol. Interesting thing is about nationality like USA has the stars in the flag because if you will represent the picture with 55 stars, the viewer will tell you that it’s something related to American identification. It’s how the human perception builds the chain of reading any signs and symbols. The sign “star” estimates as a popularity, quality, night, award.

Could we say that webcommunicate with each other through the stereotypes? Stereotype is a form of connecting with each other. It’s easy to understand how you will talk and your behaviour for achieving the needed result of your interaction.

“Stereotypes refer to things outside one’s social world, whereas social types refer to things with which one is familiar; stereotypes tend to be conceived as functionless or dysfunctional, whereas social types serve the structure of society at many points” [3].

Uniting the common perception, it’s possible to make a system, understand each other in the one quadrate of communication, learning, percepting and talking.

The alternative vision of stereotypes is individualism. It’s like a creative perception of stereotypes, look at the quadrate and make the rectangle. It’s a process of creating and improving the system. It can be specific, complex or unique.

The components of the stereotypes are: control, repression, feelings, experience. The stereotypes are rigid, open-ended, provisional, flexible, choice, sense of freedom, self-definition, unletarable, clear-cut [4]. They have the “variations” of: occupation, gender, age, kinship.

Looking on the person, you will describe:

  1. Who is she/he?
  2. What is his/her activity?
  3. What’s the age?
  4. What’s about the social group?

After that you can understand how you can interact for building the chain of mediation like Facebook and other social networks.

For example, first characteristics are name, surname, gender, location, occupation, contacts. Sometimes, based on your personal experience, you can define the name of the person without asking. It works personal identity. Lines on the clothes create the signs, up, down, left, right, cross and etc. Successful person will wear strong directed up lines. percept the signs-alphabets in the right way and remember all of them, to make the combination of the sentences. It’s the correct way to build the symbols. Logotypes are symbols, it talks in the more contextual way than just alphabets.
