Announcing Learn Job Interview English on Udemy
You can’t become fully fluent in a language without understanding the culture. When I taught English online, 40% percent of my students were preparing for an interview. I quickly realized that more than English skills, they needed help understanding the unspoken rules and cultural expectations in an interview.
Here’s what I found when I asked the following questions:
- Tell me about yourself. — Instead of offering a brief professional summary, the student often talked about their families, their parents and siblings and what they like to do on weekends.
- Can you tell me about a time when… — Many English learners aren’t prepared to talk about specific examples of their workday or don’t have the vocabulary to do it. As a result, they spend a lot of time trying to think through past experiences at work and come up with a mediocre answer on the spot.
- What is your greatest weakness ?— One English learner went into detail about a chronic medical issue that remains problematic because she refuses to eat healthy. While her story and delivery was comical, this type of answer is completely inappropriate for a job interview.
I’ve released the Learn Job Interview English course on Udemy to help English learners understand what’s really being asked of them in interviews and provide them with the vocabulary and language to do so.
