The great green macaw (Ara ambiguus) is the second largest macaw in the world. Reaching 85–90 cm long, these vibrant birds are distiquished from their sister species by their bright green hue and red frontal head band. They are known as the Buffon’s Macaw and Grand Military Macaw. Currently, their declining population is estimated at 1,000–2,499 individuals.

These birds live in humid lowland forests in Central and South America. A great green macaw’s diet consists seeds, fruits, hard-shelled nuts, and flowers. These birds are not loners, but rather they are commonly seem among others in family of 5–6. In addition, they are often associated with almond trees which they use for food and nesting.

The decline of this beautiful bird is primarily due to loss of habitat. Forests have been converted for agricultural resources, such as banana plantations and cattle pastures. Unfortunately, these birds are also often hunted for pet trade.

The great green macaw became recognized as an endangered species in 2015 by the U.S. and remains on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threated Species.

These birds are considered a flagship species, thus an important indicator of the forest health. Currently, a major conservation effort is the Río Canandé Reserve. This reservation is located just slightly northwest of the equator and protects part of the highly biodiverse Chocó habiat. Over 360 bird species can be found there.

In addition, the Ara Project also helps to protect the great green and scarlet macaws. Volunteer opportunities are available or donations can be made.
