In Defense of Mumble Rap Lyrics

Why “they don’t make any sense” isn’t acceptable criticism

A friend once sent me the song “Panda” by Desiigner when it first became popular, along with a lyric breakdown video by the artist.

My friend clearly enjoyed the music but was surprised by the lyrics; he found the lack of coherence to be funny. I had to confess that while listening to the track I hadn’t even noticed the lyrics, and I didn’t really understand why the video was so funny. I remember wondering why our reactions were so different.

Another time, a different friend showed me some music he liked which I found to be boring, and as we discussed the discrepancy it became clear he connected with the message conveyed by the lyrics, whereas I couldn’t even tell you what was said in the chorus. This was frustrating and unexpected for him, while I felt he should have given advance notice if he wanted me to pay attention to the lyrics. This same friend has told me he can’t listen to certain music I like because he dislikes the lyrics. After looking up the offending lyrics, I agree with his distaste but find it doesn’t prevent me from enjoying the song. What gives?
