Fuck the Roses, I’m Stopping to Listen to the Music
Take a break to smell the roses.
Fuck the roses. Roses can’t do shit. Music is the real magic in the world.
And yes, I do in fact know that this particular idiom is a metaphor, and that we should definitely take time out of our lives and just enjoy the smaller things. I totally agree with this statement.
My point instead lies in the place that music has in our society in this day and age. Music seems to have taken a back seat in our lives. We never seem to just set time aside in our day, put on an album or a playlist, and simply enjoy it for what it is. The main reason for this is that fact that music is always there. No matter what you do, you’re doing it with music in the background. Doing the dishes? Music in the background. Driving to work? Radio on. Writing a thing about how we always have music on? Music playing through speakers. We are constantly listening to music.
This is probably one of the main reasons that we don’t appreciate music as much as we should. It’s just there all the time, and it’s easy to listen to. We hardly ever challenge ourselves with new music or music that we wouldn’t normally check out. It’s always the same old stuff, with our tastes being dictated by the radio station or what our favourite bands are feeling at the time.
So what do we do? Switch off the radio and take out our earphones?
Nope.
We should not stop listening to music, as music is wonderful! And as I said before, it is easy to listen to. We have full access to it, and it’s ridiculous to cast that aside! No, instead, set some time aside to sit down, put on an album or two, and just enjoy it. Don’t do anything else, just listen to the album. Absorb it, and really appreciate what the artist did to each track. If it’s a chill album, lie down and just lose yourself in the beat. If it’s dance, dance! You’ll find yourself being happier and more relaxed, and you’ll get a better sense of enjoyment out of the music than if you had listened to it in the car on your way to work.
Take some time out, and stop to feel the music.
