John, I’ve never before written a comment on Medium and expect to never do so again, but after reading the negative comments your piece received, I feel some positivity is well deserved…
I feel it is difficult, for obvious reasons, to analyze a social movement (the -isms and -ologies of our world as you put it) without being seen as having a certain bias. These social issues are unique in how one can not have an outsiders perspective towards them, yet the challenge of an academic is writing it as such, and this is a problem I constantly face.
That being said, I feel you did a wonderful job of being critical without taking a stance, but instead raising questions. I think it’s interesting to consider that of all the comments that were critical of your piece, none addressed any of the questions you asked. Instead, they were simply rude, to put it lightly. (Also, why did they make so many mistakes about what you actually wrote vs. what they think or feel like you wrote? I believe there is much to be learned from their assumptions about your text, but I digress).
I could go on, but keep up the awesome writing.
