There are uses for the synchronous networking code, though I’m happy to be corrected. Two off the top of my head:
* Custom map tile APIs, Google etc., all seem to give you a synchronous callback to get image data. They’re going to call that in the background, so it’s sort of OK.
* Simple command line utilities. They’ve got nothing better to do than sit and wait.
