Are you a Lonely Generalist ? Maybe You’re a Polymath in Disguise?

You may be a polymath.

That sounds a bit better doesn’t it?

See, I think I may be one — although of course I have imposter syndrome — so it feels weird. But this is the definition

A person of wide knowledge or learning… whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas.

Feels super pretentious as ut sounds like I’m comparing myself to these people. Which Im not.

But I do know a lot about a lot. It is how my brain is wired. To get hyper focused on a topic…learn everything I need and then move on to the next. I have been called:

A writer, a publisher, an innovation expert, a strategist, a creative, an M&A dealbroker, an entrepreneur, an investor, a crypto expert, a social media strategist, an executive coach, a therapist, a board member, a salesman, a public speaker, an account handler, an innovator, a movement starter, a company owner, a financial adviser.

I am not ‘qualified’ in any of them. Nor the world’s best in any single one. BUT I do know a lot about each AND (most importantly) in each of those areas I have had brilliant people say “thank you for helping me”.

The weird thing is that industrial society hates this. It likes focus, specialisation and division of labour. I struggled a long time with that. But this wasn’t always the way. And maybe, just maybe, the world is coming to value the straddlers and dot joiners across domains.

Maybe i should call myself a “rubbish polymath”. Or a multipotenalite? Or just a good old generalist?

Or nothing at all — labels are stupid.

Except they’re not.

Maybe today’s generalists or tomorrow’s polymaths. Its the same term. The difference is the value society puts on them….
