I’ve never heard the narrative that Indians are predisposed to alcoholism, but I do know that American Indians have and continue to struggle with the use of alcohol. More than 12% of Native American deaths are alcohol-related — this is even more shocking given that Native American women are more likely to abstain from alcohol than the general population. Studies of death certificates show that alcohol deaths are four times higher for Native Americans than the overall US population. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is seven times higher for Native Americans than the overall US population. Death due to alcohol is 5.6 times higher for Native Americans than the overall US population. Death due to liver disease and cirrhosis are 3.9 times higher for Native Americans than the overall US population. Alcohol-related car accidents are three times higher for Native Americans than the overall US population.
