How has a country that has benefited — perhaps more than any other — from immigration, trade and technological innovation suddenly developed a strain of anti-immigrant, anti-innovation protectionism?
The way ahead

The reality, Mr. President, is that we haven’t. We’re all for immigration, but we want our government to encourage legal immigration — and discourage illegal immigration. We only allow 70,000 high tech workers to come to the U.S. each year — we allow 700,000 illegal immigrants enter the country each year. We want a system where those numbers are reversed. Half of all the billion dollar startups in the U.S. today were started by legal immigrants — none of them were started by illegal immigrants.

Furthermore, we’re not against free and open trade — but we insist that it be fair. If our trading partners are violating the law we need to call them on it.

We’re not anti-immigrant — we love them. We’re not anti-Mexican — we love them. We’re not Anti-Muslim — we love them. Truth is? We love you too, but we think you’re terribly misguided.
