Today in media writing class, we had to do a photo scavenger hunt to challenge our young creative minds. I choose this for my first photo, which I took for the “Something that makes you feel safe” item. I decided on this photo, because it captured a lot of my classmates who didn’t move from where our class met. I was worried at first that my photos would look like everyone else’s, but this gave me a lot of confidence.
I knew that for “The newest thing you can find” I wanted to do something in the rain, because just a few moments prior Milwaukee had a flash storm. As I was looking at some puddles, I noticed a man had stepped into some mud. While unfortunate for the man, I think this picture perfectly encapsulates a new find for me. Fresh tracks so to speak.
This spider stayed in his web through that flash storm I mentioned earlier, a sure candidate for my “Something that inspires you” category. This little guy was able to hold on and make a web strong enough to stay standing when most trees were bending in the wind.
These repetitive sharp rusty maws, or grating, is my “something that scares you”. I just imagine walking on this barefoot and get immediate shivers.
This, is the cloud! Well, maybe not the cloud, but defiantly a cloud. Luckily for me, I want to work on the cloud and with cloud based applications when I grow up so this picture is “Something that represents my dreams”.
For my “Uncomfortable people taking a picture of uncomfortable people” photo I took a picture of Izzie, and her Harley! Was it really her Harley? We may never know.
My “Something beautiful” was this photo of mushrooms. This picture takes me out of Milwaukee and into a wood-chipped enchanted forest of never-land or the likes. The pale caps against the dark damp ground made these guys stick out to me.
I never noticed this side door before. It’s weird, you’ll have to admit. The crazy light on what seems to be a maintenance door? The uneven concrete rectangle at the base of the door? I don’t know how I haven’t noticed this entrance before, but I am glad I did. This mismatch of patterns and chaos is my “Something on campus you never noticed before”.
You might notice one of these lights is not the same color as the other three. I noticed, but never got close enough to see inside of one of these overhead lights. For my “Something familiar from a new angle” I decided these lights fit the bill.
The mowed grass, large tree, and blinding sun remind me of playing in my backyard with my siblings. Although the school library is a relatively recent part of my life, I decided that it reflected my love for my local library back in IL. This is my “A place that reminds you of home”.
“A close up!” there was no exclamation point on the paper, but how could you read that with out getting excited. Close ups get me so excited because they are hard to mess up, and portray a lot of emotion. In this close up, I wanted to highlight the changing berries, the gnawed leaves of the tree, and the drops of late summer rain.
This old stump is a reminder of years gone by at the university. It encapsulates the time from seedling to sprout to full grown tree, to its death. This stump also isn’t going anywhere. It was close enough to other trees that if it was removed it would probably damage those trees around it so this stump seems to be here to stay. This was my “A time capsule” submission.
The metal sculpture’s jutting harsh rusty spikes pierce into the soft natural canopy of leaves. This picture makes me uneasy, and uncomfortable. The randomness of the spikes adds to this unsettling feeling. “Contrasting textures” was the category I took this for.
This is a spotlight that shines light onto the theatre building. The reflective squares brought all kinds of weird dimensions to this photo, which reminded me of the light that they reflect. In one of my computer science classes this afternoon we talked about a lot of electronic parts, and perspective. I felt this captures “Something that represents what you learned today”.
All I could focus on when I wasn’t taking photos was the sound of the highway. I climbed up on the little barrier to get this picture, and when I finally climbed the little wall it started to rain. The motions of mechanical vehicles and falling drops are what I used to represent “Pay attention for 60 seconds without distractions, now take a photo”.
Walking back to the class, I took this photo of the central mall and the sun beaming over it. I wanted to show the long shadows off in someway, along with the sun’s reflection on wet concrete. This photo makes me tired, because the end of the day means end of classes for the day. Speaking of endings, this is the end of my photo hunt. This experience was familiar to me, as I like to take photos. The structure of having a list made things interesting, but I ended up just taking a lot of pictures and then matching them to the list.
