Maybe not completely free, but deducted from taxes and based on income, yes. Your northern neighbours (of which I am a citizen) do it and so do many other first-world countries.

We do have private health care, too. Many employers offer group health care and, although it isn’t a requirement for them to do so (if I’m not mistaken… law isn’t my forte), most do, because it’s the right thing to do and they want healthy employees.

But my point is, even if unemployed, you have a shot at “free” health care, levied from your taxes. Because we all provide for each other, whether rich or poor.

It’s not impossible, and I’ve never seen a politician or a citizen cry out that free health care is the worst thing ever or to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. To us, that’d be… pretty demonic, to be honest.

Oh, and I suppose Scotland and other countries’ free educational systems could be another example of free “something” to base off of. Free, but paid with taxes.
