Losing Followers Is A Good Thing — I Swear

This morning I signed onto my company’s instagram page and saw we were down six followers. Instead of freaking out, taking it personally and assuming it was because my posts suck, I was relieved. Bye! See ya! I wish you the best! I lose followers all the time, and I’m happy about it. You’re probably like, Alexis you are crazy, how could you be stoked on losing followers? I’ll explain in a sec.
But first, let me preface by saying, if you are losing followers at a rapid rate (especially people who are in your target audience) there may be another reason that I’m not about to address.
Maybe you’re posting way to much, or maybe you’re being to sales-y. No matter how amazing your content it — those two reason will have anyone clicking the unfollow button.
1. SPAMMERS
A lot of accounts on instagram are spammers. These dudes follow you for a day ( a couple of days if you are lucky) then just dip out. So for a company losing these people is relieving. If they don’t unfollow, then block them. They just troll around leaving comments like “GET 1000 FOLLOWERS INSTANTLY”, and who wants that on their page.
2. NARROWING YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Bloggers and business owners: When you first started did you know who your target audience was? Did the people who you were targeting — become the people buying your products or services? Did they respond positively to your posts?
If you own a company or a brand, losing followers helps you hone in on your target audience. It allows you to hone in your target audience and better serve your people! It allows you to spend more time engaging with the followers who genuinely like what you have to offer and will purchase from you.
So next time someone unfollows you, don’t take it personally. Because, it honestly isn’t Think about yourself and how you go about unfollowing people. It’s not personal — you just don’t there photos on your timeline anymore. End of story. Take their unfollowing you as a building block to your growing your brand or company, and begin focusing on valuing your ride or die followers!
Have you been looking at your unfollowings as a good thing?
