Give your customers something for trying.
Since I launched Eco Toy Co this time last year I’ve been somewhat obsessed with trying to increase conversion rates as much as possible. Something that I’ve noticed from looking at the analytics is that our basket page is one of the highest viewed pages, which got me thinking what can we do to get people over the line when they get as far as the basket and why aren’t they progressing to the checkout.
One idea I had was around discount codes — although we give people 10% off their first order if they sign up to the mailing list, something I noticed from watching HotJar videos on the site was that people would often try to guess the code without signing up to the mailing list.
Now obviously we want people to sign up to the mailing list, but we still want to grab those people who don’t want to sign up and get them to convert. Which got me thinking…
“ What if we give people who try to guess the discount code 5% off”
This way if people don’t want to sign up they’re not getting the full 10% off, but they do feel compelled to complete their purchase because they’ve been given a nifty little 5% off their order value.
So How’d I Do That Then?
Using a mash up combination of a few different sources, including the ever great Business Bloomer blog, I came up with the following code snippet:
This will watch for someone attempting to use a coupon code, and if they get it wrong — the site will auto apply a 5% discount on their order. It’s simple, but surprisingly effective (we’ve had roughly 2% of orders since we implemented it use the code), which in the context of conversions isn’t massive, but it does work and help get people over the line.
