Grade 9 Geography Notes pt.1
Four concepts of critical thinking in geography: interrelationships, spatial importance, constants and trends
The interrelationships:
-Geographers try to understand the relationships that exist in the natural and human environments, and between these environments
-It becomes easier to determine the influence that one environment has on another
-Then we can answer the question “Why should we care?”
The spatial importance:
-This relates to the key questions “What is there in this place?” and “Why in this place?”
-Locating something can be important for several reasons
-The importance of the location varies for humans, animals and plants
Constants and trends:
-To be able to recognize the characteristics which are similar in a natural and human environment (constant) and the stable characteristics in a particular situation and over a certain period (trend)
The geographic perspective:
-A perspective is seeing the world from different points of view
-Geography is a unique discipline which has links with many other fields such as economics, geophysics, town planning or history.
The geography survey process:
-Form questions
-Gather and organize information
-Analyze and interpret the information
-Evaluate and draw conclusions
-Communicate results
