Earlier today, from the comfort and safety of my home, I had a video chat with my little sister who lives across the country. A majority of our conversation centered around COVID-19, unsurprisingly.

Half jokingly, the topic of toilet paper supply levels in our homes came up (thankfully, both of us are OK). As we started to criticize the behavior of those in our communities who have been hoarding toilet paper (and other supplies) during this public health crisis, I looked to science for an explanation of why this behavior is happening (and, as you’ll see, why it is expected).
