Never Go Against Your Gut Feeling

I always try to follow my gut feeling and always try to make a good call. This time I made a mistake; I didn’t go with my gut feeling, I didn’t think with logic because my emotions got in the way as always. It’s a very small thing, but this is how small things add up to large things.

A friend asked me at the agency to help them out with an artwork they needed urgently. I said that we don’t do design work without a creative brief and we need time. We don’t do design work within 24 hours because it will not represent IQD, the quality of the work will be rubbish. I was influenced to do it because they didn’t need creative work just a simple poster. Deep inside, I knew that I would have to invest time, energy and effort but I thought emotionally and lied to myself that it was going to be done smoothly. It’s NEVER ever DONE smoothly!

This is for me; Alex you have been working at the agency for the past 6 years, how many times did something go smoothly without changes? Yeah, I know…

The result; around 5 phone calls, 6 emails, conversations over Slack with the designer. We did the work and I received an “upset” phone call saying that we had forgotten to add a new sentence that was mentioned to us later. It was my mistake because I didn’t double check it. When I told them that we would add it the response was; we just emailed it for print and they hung up the phone.

I didn’t mention the energy and the time invested by both parties. Time is our most valuable resource; we need to respect our time and other’s people time as well.

Lesson; if you have a belief about something, follow it. Don’t be like me and go with your emotions because it will lead you nowhere. If you have a gut feeling about something follow it and leave your emotions alone. The alternative was to not help them out because we are not good at making something within 24 hours, they could have found somebody who might have been more suitable for this project and not have wasted their time and energy.

Always, always go with your gut feeling.
