“A job I don’t hate”
I love what I do. I get to be creative everyday. I get to design, plan, program, problem solve, listen to music and play everyday. Building an app is hard work, don’t get me wrong, but it is certainly rewarding.
Joe told me earlier that he had a friend that said
All I want is a job I don’t hate.
It makes me sad that so many people spend the majority of their week doing something they resent. I don’t want to tell people they’re wrong for working at their boring office job, but I find it difficult to empathise with them when they’re not taking any action. There are a million opportunities for smart people in developed counties. If none of them sound right to you, create your own. Save up a bunch of money, try and build your shit, if you fail you go back to your office job with some satisfaction that you had the balls to give it a shot.
I think the main issue that is missed when talking about jobs that people hate is the lack of a bigger goal. Any shitty job looks like just a stepping stone in the epic tale of your career when it is a part of some master plan. You need to know why you’re doing something and hopefully for how long. That way you have a real sense of clarity and reason to what you do everyday and that should trump any feelings of hate.
