Saul Williams — Twice the First Time

In my brief time in New York City, I was not yet able to find that city’s soundtrack. When I think of Berlin, I clearly hear Pantha Du Prince’s Black Noise, or some of DJ Pete’s old-school EQD tracks. When I think of Bristol, I think of Pinch’s Spiders or Appleblim and Peverelist’s angsty Circling. But when I think of New York, hardly anything comes to mind. Sure, these speaks volumes about my ignorance more than it says anything about the City.

And yet, Saul Williams’ Twice the First Time always takes me to a New York City I’ve never known — the New York of Ginsberg and Kerouac. There’s struggle in this track, but it’s brimming with poetry.
