Thank you for this article. I agree that systems + platforms is a potent combination. One of the most interesting instantiations of this model I know is Participatory City. The Illustrated Guide has a nice set of visualizations of how their platform and ecosystem support one another.
I can map this onto Jamshid Gharajedaghi’s four systems perspectives from the book Systems Thinking, which he claims are also mutually exclusive and exhaustive: structure, function, process and context. His Structure = a pure version of your System. His Process = System + Sequence. His Function = System + Comparison. His Context is a recursion of the previous 3 perspectives at the next higher Systems scale.
