The Backfire of Political Correctness

The 2008 Election changed everything. Barack Obama was on the rise with his message of “Hope” while John McCain was painted as an old man. Obama was to be the president that was going to revolutionize the way we see modern-day politics, however the product of his presidency has completely backfired against the Democratic Party today.

During Obama’s tenure in office, the rise of political correctness in pop culture grew exponentially. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I find it to have destroyed the integrity of once-great news sources while opening the minds of the public to not always take things at face value.

First let’s set a formal definition of political correctness. Political correctness has been defined by Merriam-Webster as “conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated”. At first glance this sounds great! No more racism! No more sexism! However, I find it to be the same as an ostrich putting its head in the sand. Simply hiding or not referring to an issue does not make it suddenly go away, and it has made things worse. By hiding these issues from today’s youth, it is creating a victim culture that is rapidly growing.
