4 Ways to Improve Agility & Game Speed

  1. Improve Strength — I know I sound like a broken record here but you MUST posses adequate strength in order to overcome inertia, decelerate, and re-accelerate in another direction.
  2. Incorporate Chaos Drills — If you’ve been following me for a while now you’ve seen me use many visual, cognitive, and vocal chaos drills with my athletes to improve game speed/agility. Chaos drills are a great way to improve agility because they simulate the athlete in a chaotic (unpredictable) environment. The same environment the athlete is faced with when he or she is on the field playing their sport.

3. Improve Acceleration — I believe there’s a very close correlation between an athletes ability to change direction and accelerate. Improving your acceleration via acceleration drills (Push-Up, Falling, Jump-Back, Mountain Climber Sprint Starts) will not only improve acceleration mechanics and sprinting speed but they will also improve game speed/agility as well.

4. Improve Deceleration — Improving your ability to decelerate is another very important aspect of improving agility. To improve your ability to decelerate you should spend time on improving eccentric strength. By improving eccentric strength your enhancing your ability to stop, and change direction more rapidly without the potential dissipation of elastic energies.

I really hope this post was able to help everyone! If you have any questions send me an email or tweet! -Alex
