The story is that Edward Steichen was in bed and not doing too well. He died soon after. His housekeeper thought to herself, “I’d better ask him about my son before he (Steichen) dies.” So she asked, “What should my son do to learn photography?” Steichen lifted his head from his pillow and said, “Don’t send him to school.”

I would only add that photography, writing and prostitution are the last of the self-taught professions.
