The success of smart cities comes down to who makes city infrastructure decisions- governments or corporations.
Governments are theoretically making decisions with the publics best interest in mind, however they rarely have the capital to keep the smartest people employed.
Corporations are theoretically driven to make profit-driven decisions, maximizing efficiency but not maximizing the human experience (the “connectedness” that the author talks about).
Who should we put in charge of making our cities smart? Should it be the smartest people? Or the kindest ones?
