From Windows 95 all the way to Windows 7, the start menu has been an integral part of Windows that set it apart from the rest. In fact, Microsoft heavily advertised this feature in the super-popular “Start Me Up” Commercial.

Then, in 2012, Microsoft decided to expand the start menu into the touch-friendly start screen, which gained widespread criticism around the world. Don’t get me wrong, the interface is quite nice on touchscreen devices, but many didn’t like how it functioned with the traditional mouse and keyboard.

So, with Windows 10, Microsoft has made a compromise. On PCs using mouse and keyboard, a start menu will be utilized, while on touch devices, a start screen, much like the one in Windows 8, will appear. On devices that can switch between touch and mouse and keyboard, such as the Surface Pro 3, a feature called Continuum will be put in place, which will detect the presence of certain peripherals and adjust the look and feel of Windows 10 accordingly.

The new Start Menu will combine the familiar all apps list from Windows 7 on the left, while on the right it will incorporate the Live Tiles from Windows 8. It will have a translucent background.
