Is art worth the artist’s suffering?

I’ve long been fascinated by the connection between genius and mental illness. Sometimes, I think that in order for a brain to be so brilliant and creative that it has to work a lot differently than a “normal” brain, and so the world is hard to deal with.

At times I’ve wondered how art would suffer is so many of our geniuses over history were successfully treated for their mental illnesses. Would it be a huge loss to the world if without pain they made no art? And is the art worth the suffering of the artist?
