Working with international clients is not a necessity, but it surely opens up lots of opportunities. I live in the UK, and while I’ve always had British clients, the majority of my big contracts have been with American companies, simply because the demand for content is higher over the pond.
As for communications, most of my clients are respectful of my time, but there are moments when time zones and schedules clash through no fault of either party. I know people who turn down jobs because the client is in a different time zone, but I like to choose my projects based on how interesting or lucrative they are, so location is a secondary factor.
