The Tale of English
Ryan Teague Beckwith

You poor thing!

In trying to make a punchy point to your journalism students you have been pretty well pilloried. I have to say, however, that I disagree with you. I am not a great lover of contemporary writing as the language is limited and the grammar is, so often, appalling. I scour antiquarian book shops reading works with varied and interesting vocabulary,(yes I oten have to refer to a dictionary, but what’s wrong with that?)and a proper use of grammar. If everybody followed your suggestion then we shall end up with an Oxford English Dictionary the size of a small pamphlet,. The information contained in the writings may still be interesting but the pleasure of reading such literature would, for me,be greatly diminished.
