If you are reading this blog, chances are you are in desperate need to get rid of these dreaded morning sickness symptoms! I’ve been there mama. I remember finding out I was pregnant and it was all fun and exciting until…da da da…I couldn’t hold anything down. I would get sick in the morning almost everyday and sometimes in the late afternoon as well. I remember thinking to myself “I don’t know how much longer I can put up with this!”. As if I had a choice. So instead of trying to push through the day with morning sickness and fatigue I researched how to overcome morning sickness at home. Morning sickness is defined as: “nausea in pregnancy, typically occurring in the first few months. Despite its name, the nausea can affect pregnant women at any time of day”. And you have to remember, it’s not like the stomach flu, food poisoning or a cold, it’s hormonal and sometimes you just have to accept it and do what you can to make yourself comfortable and healthy for yourself and your baby. These tips I’m about to go over have helped me immensely and I hope they help you, so you can enjoy your time growing your baby!

  1. Eat what you can tolerate.

I know some women deal with severe morning sickness and have trouble keeping down water (which can easily lead to dehydration, yikes!). But eat what doesn’t make you sick, even if that’s eating lunch foods for breakfast and vice versa. Most bland foods are easier to keep down without causing nausea such as:

  • Bread/Toast
  • Crackers
  • Pretzels
  • Apples
  • Pasta
  • Oatmeal
  • Ginger
  • English muffins
  • Soup

2. Eat GINGER.

Ginger was a life saver for me personally. I loved the ginger drinks (make sure they contain real ginger), ginger candy, and ginger slices (yes, the ones you get on the side of sushi). Once I started feeling nauseated I would pop a ginger candy in my mouth and I would immediately feel better. Be warned, ginger is very strong so it may take some getting used to.

3. Essential oils.

Essential oils can help morning sickness disappear, it’s really incredible. Have you ever felt stressed and the moment you walked into a spa, you felt better? Chances are thats from the aroma. The best essential oils to use for morning sickness are: Peppermint, Lavender, Fennel, Lemon and Eucalyptus. You can put some drops on your wrists, behind your ears and under your nose for quick relief. You can also add a few drops to the corners of your shower and soak up all the relaxing steam.

4. Sea-Bands.

Sea-Bands are made for motion sickness (car, boat, travel), nausea and morning sickness. Sea-Bands work by using acupressure. They go on each wrist and will suppress your acupressure points and decrease nausea. You must wear them before morning sickness starts and you must have them placed correctly on each wrist for them to work. But once they do you won’t regret wearing them, even if they don’t match your outfit.

5. Make sure your taking enough vitamin B6.

Vitamin B6 is important to take during pregnancy to help the development of your baby's brain and nervous system, but it also has benefits for you as well. Vitamin B6 helps with maintaining blood glucose levels and helps with morning sickness if you are deficient. It’s a win-win for you and baby. Check with your doctor before taking any supplement and ask about dosage.

Here are a few things to avoid to help with morning sickness:

  • Spicy food
  • Greasy, high fat foods
  • Caffeine
  • Sweets
  • Foods with strong odors (fish, canned tuna, curry, garlic)
