Awareness. We are awareness, consciousness. This consciousness is unmanifest creation and is universal but differentiated. As a baby, before we can speak and have thoughts as words, we have awareness. Just be very silent for a minute and see how the thoughts then start flooding in. Then you will see how that awareness is always there, but the thoughts come and go. For a whole big explanation of how to go between awareness and consciously thinking for planning etc you could read Eckhart Tolle. To get better at maintaining pure consciousness, I recommend finding a good meditation teacher.
