Thank you so much for sharing, Joel. Your article provides a perspective that’s so very difficult to explain. Especially to a loved one who is blessed with a “generally untouched by mental illness” sort of outlook. I’m not being sarcastic in that statement; I envy them.
But being suicidal is such a personal experience… one you’re tempted to keep to yourself. In fact, one you’re tempted to never speak of again for fear of being misunderstood. But one that can make such a strong statement to others — whether they’ve attempted suicide, thought of suicide, or never experienced the depths of suicide — it provides clarity.
You’ve managed to put into words what it feels like to want to die — and want to live — in the same moment. I hope you’re aware of the amazing strength sharing your story required.
