The people who already have what we want

"I don't do work projects, I only do life projects"

When these words came out of the mouth of my friend Lars, something switched inside of me. Yes, the sentence put into perspective how I approach work, but it was more than that. The way I saw my friend changed.

Lars has always been a dear friend; the kind I love spending time with as he is such an amazing host. When you talk to him, he is fully there; he is caring and nurturing. However, when those words were spoken out loud, I realized Lars is much more than my friend; he is my mentor.

The people who already have what we want. These are people to pay attention to, as they can all be our mentors. There's no need for a formal invitation. We need to know what we want, the awareness to identify who has it, and willingness to observe, to learn from them and do the work.

Guruji Maharaj, my bhairavanand tantra guru, says that in his life so far he has had 67 gurus. He says we go from guru to guru, or mentor to mentor, as we go after that which we need to learn. We learn different things from different people.

For me, one of these people turned out to be my friend Lars. He has much of what I want more of in life: a loving and nurturing attitude, and a way to embrace work as a conscious and authentic part of his fullness of being. We often don't need to go 500 miles to find our mentors. If anything, it is humbling to notice how everything is already right here, ready for us if we truly reach out. If we only are present in the here now, holding clear intentions and a conscious nose to sniff it when it presents itself.
