If you have a kidney disease and you are on dialysis, then you are already familiar with the routine associated with this. You come to the hospital, the lie down on a recliner and the doctors attaches some tubes into your and the machine starts to work. Now, this explanation does now explain how the machine works in any way. To that end, let us use this blog to answer this very question: what is the working of a dialysis machine.

Let us first go over with the overview

Let us first look at what you might not know:

1. You come to the hospital and lie on a recliner: this is to provide you a stable state for the next step.

2. Two tubes are then connected to your body: One tube pulls out the unfiltered blood and the other one puts it back in.

3. These tubes are connected to the dialysis machine: it is the machine where the blood is then filtered.

Now that is the stuff that you might have been told about the dialysis process. However, there is one component that people seem to forget, the dialysis machine.

The dialysis machine

Now, this machine is called the dialysis machine (dialyser is a cooler name). The job of a dialyser is to monitor the amounts of dialysate. Now what is dialysate? It is a liquid compound that separates the wastes from the blood that is extracted from the kidney patient. Furthermore, i also maintain the electrolytes amounts in your body.

This machine consists of alarms, monitoring equipment, two connective tubes and 3 jugs.

Now, let us move into what whose two jugs are for. A dialysate is not something that is used as it is. It is something that has to be mixed and the reaction of this mixture is what is used to separate the wastes from the blood.

The dialysate entails these three chemicals:

1. Purified water.

2. Acidified solution.

3. Bicarbonate

When these chemicals are mixed in dialysate is formed, it interacts with the blood and starts to do its job. The blood and dialysate mixture is run through the dialyzer in order to separate the wastes from the blood. The part with wastes is washed down the drain and the remaining healthy blood is directed back towards the patient’s body.

Now, this is entire gist of how the machine works and how it is connected to your body.

However, there are some additional elements to the machine that you might want to look into. There is a solution called Heparin that is injected into you. The reason for this injection is that throughout the dialysis process, your blood might be clotted. In order to thin out this occasional clotting, heparin is provided.

This is how the dialysis machine works. There are certain nuanced of the machine as well that we did not get into but those are the ones that dictate the process of dialysis itself. To that end, if you have gone through our other blogs, you might already be aware of this.
