In Mumbai, these days, all of us like to explore new places, new restaurants, upcoming brands and new hot spots to hang out. The streets are so full of life that you can’t just take your eyes off them.

Busy streets. Noise, traffic, pollution. People fighting on the corner of the road. Let’s take a look at the footpath. This is where shopping comes into the picture beyond big malls and branded stores. Shopping is fun, but it’s all the more fun when it doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket.

You name it; you get it. Cool, huge metallic pendants, funky silver neck pieces, colorful earrings, chunky cool bracelets, rings, chokers, anklets. You get everything. Roadside jewellery showcases all the seasonal and fashion trends.

Riya, a fashion enthusiast says, “I have tremendous love for fashion. Colours attract me, and everything I have should be trendy. When it comes to accessories, I prefer Causeway, Hill Road, Lokhandwala any day for junk jewellery. They have lots of options available. I can buy all of them at very affordable prices.”Recently, junk has grabbed a lot of love. From college students to middle aged women, it’s preferred by everyone. Now, no more does one buy jewellery just because of its aesthetic appeal. It has to enhance their ‘cool look’.

A college student busy bargaining for Navratri says, “I don’t know where to go exactly in malls and it becomes much easier to shop for silver junk jewellery on the street. I know Colaba Causeway is the perfect place for that.”

However, everything isn’t hunky dory. There is a flip side to it. At times, it just rusts and one can’t use it for a longer time but Rina a 44 year old woman, who had picked up a lot of neck pieces for herself says “So what if it doesn’t last longer? They are cheap and I can always keep these aside or dump them and buy whatever is trending next.”

The word junk is more than just junk, when coming to jewellery it has become more consumer-friendly. Wearing a trendy piece of jewellery makes you feel more confident and unique. The sellers on the streets say that they buy it from wholesalers in bulk so it’s reasonable for them to sell it at cheaper prices. At times, they sell these jewellery for Rs.1000 to Rs.1500 which sounds too much when it comes to street. “It is still cheap. They would be much more expensive in stores and people prefer buying it,” says Ravindra Dhule, a seller on Hill Road.

Walking on the streets, we came across a girl. She looked fascinated with junk jewellery. When asked about it, she showed us her phone wallpaper which read “LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WEAR BORING JEWELLERY” and she further added, “Affordable, cool, and trendy is all that I need.” Junk jewellery on the streets has become like vitamins to fashion. Street shopping is like gambling. You either win it or you lose it.
